Bushin’s Story

Bushin was created in 2009 by Sensei Cailey Barker, following 30 years of martial arts experience. He felt that many traditional styles have great discipline and structure but lacked practicality and the flexibility to adapt. Conversely, modern fighting styles lacked some of the tradition that made learning a martial art special.

Sensei Cailey’s approach was simple. Create the syllabus by drawing from his experience, pressure test it, and adapt it to improve. As a result, Bushin is continually getting better as a fighting system as we discover better and more effective methods and techniques.

Following Sensei Cailey’s retirement, Bushin is now headed up by Sensei Jason, who is working hard to continue refining and improving Bushin as an effective fighting style.

No two scenarios are ever exactly the same. How you deal with them should be adaptable as well. To help you, Bushin will give you the tools so you can build your own fighting style, pressure test it by sparring to see if it works, and tweak it if it doesn’t. With us, you can truly build a style personalised to yourself.

“Bushin is brilliant. You learn skills there that could save your life. The classes are relaxed and you can move at your own pace. Give it a try, you won’t regret it.”

Bushin’s roadmap to apply martial arts to the street. Start with five bases that you need to know the basics for. Then you start mixing them all together and pressure test them. At a higher level, we add in harder tests to allow you to learn to dominate a fight and cope in more complex street situations.

Passionate about martial arts and always eager to learn, Sensei Jason brings nearly 20 years of training experience and a wealth of teaching knowledge to Bushin HQ. His enthusiasm for helping others develop, both on and off the mats, is at the heart of everything he does.

As one of Bushin’s very first students when the club opened its doors in 2009, Jason has played a key role in the club’s journey from the very beginning. Alongside achieving a high level of proficiency in the Bushin system, he has also trained extensively in Shorinji Kempo, 4D Combat, boxing, Muay Thai, weapons, and groundwork. In 2019, following Sensei Cailey’s retirement, Jason proudly stepped into the role of Chief Instructor.

Jason believes that the best instructors never stop being students. Guided by his philosophy of “strength through humility”, he continues to train regularly at the world-renowned Breen Legacy Academy and attends seminars with leading martial artists, including Bob Breen and Phil Norman. By constantly learning, evolving, and challenging himself, Jason ensures Bushin students benefit from modern, practical, and effective martial arts training in every class.

Whether you’re taking your very first lesson or looking to sharpen your existing skills, Jason is committed to creating a welcoming, supportive environment where everyone can learn, grow, and enjoy the journey.

Fiona has 20 years of martial arts experience in Shorinji Kempo and Aikido as well as being with Bushin since it started.

She has competed and won Shorinji Kempo competitions where she represented the UK Women’s Embu team and has travelled all over the world to train, which shows the dedication she has at getting better. She current trains with Jason and Isaac at the Breen Legacy Academy and has established herself as a fearless and very technical martial artist.

Isaac started training in martial arts at the age of 14 with Shotokan Karate, where he holds a first degree blackbelt, and later moved onto Thai Boxing.

He has competed in tournaments which include Sanda (Chinese kickboxing) as well as point and full contact karate tournaments where he has excelled.

He is now our latest Black Belt after a very long and difficult 4 hour grading.

Scott has trained in martial arts for over 10 years; starting off in Shorinji Kempo, before moving into Bujinkan Ninjutsu, and later on Bushin.

Scott prides himself on being able to fight with clean technical form, and is very knowledgeable in creating more power by being tidy and efficient.

Currently a brown belt, he looks forward to grading for his black belt in Bushin in the very near future.

Having gathered experience and training for over 15 years, Stephen is our head instructor over at our Central London club.

He has an extensive martial arts background having first started in Taekwondo before expanding his horizons into Jujitsu and Krav Maga. He then joined us in Bushin and graded up to black belt as well as opening up a new club in Pimlico after Sensei Cailey retired.

Not resting on his laurels, he continues to train in other styles and is currently on the Elite path to becoming a Defence Lab senior too.

Cailey’s been throwing punches (and occasionally himself) around for over 40 years. From BJJ to Boxing, Karate to Kali, Muay Thai to MMA, Taekwondo to Wing Chun – if it kicks, strikes or grapples, he’s probably done it. He’s trained and competed across the globe, picking up black belts like passport stamps – he holds a handful of them, including a rare and highly coveted 5th degree in Shorinji Kempo.

He opened his first club back in the early ‘90s and hasn’t stopped teaching since, earning instructor credentials under legends like Bob Breen and Eddie Quinn. After founding Bushin, he officially stepped back from full-time teaching in 2019 due to injury – but don’t let that fool you. He’s still quietly in the game, trading blows with his own battered body, now with more wisdom, more smiles…and a lot less hair.

You can learn more about him on his personal website here.
